THE FRIENDS CLUB OF ZORATS QARER

This is a Flickr badge showing public photos and videos from Oxford University Expedition to Qarahunge.

Main goals and Methods

The main two goals of our expedition are to create detailed GPS map of the Qarahunge monument and villages/ monuments nearby. This will allow us to understand better the logic behind the positioning the villages. It seems that the position of the villages and the monuments in the region are strongly correlated. In particular, we hope to be able to mirror the map of the monument on the night sky. This has the potential to prove directly that the people of this prehistoric society had deep understanding of the night sky. Measuring the angle between the monument and its “reflection” in the night sky will provide us with a fundamentally new and independent estimate of the age of the monument. This will allow us to estimate the time scale and trajectory of migration of the ancient tribes, which left behind a trail of henges with names consisting of the same roots.
The expedition will also boost local and global appreciation of the monument as well as development of tourism in the region. It will be a good opportunity for local members of the team to work with Oxford students hopefully leading to long-term collaboration.
